The simplest wood veneer is a thin slice of natural wood, usually less than 1/40 inch thick. These veneers are typically pressed or laminated onto a thicker core material such as plywood, plywood or MDF to create structural panels that are used in place of thicker hardwoods. This is still real wood, but machines and technology allow the material to be sliced thinly without waste, rather than sawing it into thick boards. Like planks, it can be flat sawn, quarter sawn, split split or roll sawn, and each cut produces a different grain pattern.
Using veneer instead of or in combination with traditional hardwood has many advantages. Using veneer is environmentally friendly as it allows us to use natural resources more cheaply and efficiently. Compared to a 1-inch-thick hardwood panel, a veneer cut to 1/40th of an inch produces 40 times the decorative surface of the panel. Being a flexible wood, the physical properties of the veneer allow it to veneer surfaces that are difficult or impossible to achieve with hardwoods. The countless choices of different veneers in different cuts offer far more possibilities than is normally possible with hardwood. The ability to stain and finish veneer to individual tastes is just as important and no different than hardwood. The result is a beautiful wood surface with depth, color and unique character.
