OSB is made from wood that grows quickly and sustainably. This includes southern yellow pine, aspen poplar and mixed hardwood species. OSB is made by cutting logs into strands, then drying them and treating them with wax and bindingers. These strands are then arranged into large sheets and heated under high pressure to form panels. OSB is a product that serves the same purpose as plywood.
Advantages
Similar to plywood, but cheaper and more uniform.
Aspen and Poplar trees are used. However, they can also be made from smaller trees and fast-growing species.
It is more resistant to decay than plywood.
As two knot holes overlap, there are no soft spots. You can nail the edges of the knot holes without worrying about them.
Disadvantages
OSB is not waterproof and therefore cannot be used in exterior projects. You should not use OSB that is water resistant unless you have a special grade.
